Tirana, Albania’s Capital is famous for its busy streets, bustling outdoor cafés, and colourful architecture. However, during my nearly two-week stay in the city, I experienced seven days of rain straight, so what do you do in Tirana when it rains?

Well, first don’t let that discourage you—rain or shine, there are plenty of things to do and see in Tirana. In fact, a rainy day might just offer the perfect opportunity to explore the city in a whole new way. Ok, I admit by day five of rain, I was ready to go home but I was house-sitting for three cats, so that wasn’t an option.

So, whether you want to dive into history, enjoy delicious Albanian food, be pampered or find a cosy spot to relax, here are the best ways to spend a rainy day in Tirana.

Visit Bunk’Art 1 and Bunk’Art 2, Tirana’s Bunker Museums

A miserable, rainy day is the perfect excuse to visit Tirana’s bunker museums. Bunk’Art 1, on the outskirts of the city near the cable car, is a vast underground complex built during the communist era. It’s now a museum showcasing Albania’s history and life under Enver Hoxha’s rule.

But depending on how heavy the rain is, you might not fancy combining this with a trip up the mountain.

However, if you prefer to stay in the city centre, Bunk’Art 2 near Skanderbeg Square offers a smaller but fascinating look at the country’s past.

Both bunker museums are fascinating, but I slightly prefer Bunk’Art 2 in the city centre if you only have time to visit one. However, due to its central location, it gets a lot busier than the other one.

Visit the House of Leaves

This former surveillance centre is now a museum dedicated to Albania’s secret police and the methods used to monitor citizens during the communist era. It’s a fascinating and eye-opening experience that provides insight into the country’s recent history.

Relax with a Spa Day

A rainy day is the perfect excuse to unwind at a spa. I did the Time To Relax package at the Ritual Spa. I spent a lovely few hours using the sauna and steam room, having a hammam until my skin was squeaky clean, and getting one of the best massages of my life—and I have had a few!

If the rain isn’t too bad, the spa is a short walk to Tirana Park which is a pleasant place to wander and there are plenty of cafes, if you need to escape a heavy downpour!

Sip Coffee at a Quirky Café

Tirana has a fantastic café culture, and a rainy day is the perfec excuse to slow down and enjoy it. Try Komiteti—Kafe Muzeum, where vintage décor meets strong Albanian coffee and raki.

Enjoy a Long Albanian Lunch

Albanians love their food, and a rainy day is the perfect time to indulge. I had some fantastic meals in Tirana. My favourite restaurants included Ceren Ismet Shehu (although it does get mixed reviews online ) Tartuf Shop in Tirana Castle and Tradita te Meri (cash only) in the New Bazaar.

Actually, I didn’t have a bad meal anywhere.

Take a Cooking Class

On the subject of food, I had a fun afternoon taking a cooking class and learning how to make traditional Albanian dishes. Cooking classes in Tirana often include local specialties like byrek, tave kosi, or fërgesë.

As anyone who knows me will tell you, I am a dreadful cook and hate being in the kitchen, but I had a lot of fun on this course (maybe because of the homemade wine!). Surprisingly, my food turned out pretty good, even if I do say that myself.

Go Shopping

If you’re in the mood for retail therapy, Tirana has a mix of modern malls and unique boutiques. Tirana East Gate (TEG) is the city’s largest mall, offering international brands, a food court, and a cinema. Films in Albania are in the original soundtrack with subtitles. Take bus 2 or 8a to TEG.

Don’t fancy leaving the centre, then visit the Toptani Shopping Centre close to Skanderbeg Square.

For something more local, check out the New Bazaar (Pazari i Ri), where you’ll find artisanal goods, fresh produce, and souvenirs.

Check Out the Tirana Castle Area

While much of Tirana Castle is outdoors, it does have covered areas with charming cafés and shops. It’s a good place to wander, grab a coffee, or browse for unique souvenirs without getting completely soaked.

Wine or Raki Tasting

If you’re interested in sampling some Albanian drinks, head to a wine bar or a local spot specializing in raki. Many places offer tastings of local wines, often paired with cheeses and cured meats.

I quite enjoyed some of the Albanian wines, but the raki was way too strong for me.

Catch a Show at the Opera or a Local Theatre

If your visit coincides with a performance (sadly, mine didn’t ), Tirana’s Opera House or National Theatre could be a great way to spend an evening. Performances range from classical music to modern Albanian plays.

A little rain doesn’t have to ruin your plans in Tirana. With a mix of history, culture, shopping, and relaxation, the city still has plenty to offer—just don’t forget your umbrella and enjoy!
