Seems like there has been a bit of a theme here lately with regard to waterfalls. The truth is that there are many beautiful places here in Chiapas and a lot of them have waterfalls. A few weeks ago I was asked to go along with Foundation Escalera while they were evaluating scholarship and incentive programs for Mexican school students in underperforming rural areas. One of the schools they were evaluating was in the money poor but scenery rich village of Agua Azul located in the jungles of northern Chiapas.

Most visitors to the falls don’t get to enjoy the charming village but to me, it too was worth a visit also. The falls themselves consist of many cataracts following, one after another, into a series of cool blue pools.
The blue color is derived from high mineral content and many of the logs that have fallen into the river have become encased in a thick shell of limestone. Last time I was here the weather had been stormy and the pools were muddy. This time I was able to photograph them in their full splendor.
This is beautiful – that water color is so lovely! The pools look like a great place to swim a bit – did you get in?
No, actually I was there “after hours” and didn’t want to push things too much. It is a great place to swim though. I have been a few times and the water isn’t always this blue but this time it was perfect!
I have always wanted to swim under a waterfall and this looks like an ideal place to do it. Simply gorgeous!
Yes, this is definitely a great place to do it. I have heard there a others in the middle of nowhere and not even known to tourists. Trying to pin a few of those down!
