Amersfoort is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for an easy day trip from Utrecht. Just 15 minutes away by train, this picturesque city offers medieval streets, scenic canals, and a fascinating history—all without the crowds of bigger Dutch towns.

I took a day trip to Amersfoort from Utrecht where I was house sitting for a lovely cat and found it a lovely place to wander, soak up the history, and enjoy a relaxed pace. It was another of those “ooh, I could live here” towns, of which I have so many.

Here’s how to make the most of a day in Amersfoort.

Getting to Amersfoort from Utrecht

The train from Utrecht Centraal to Amersfoort Centraal only takes 15 minutes, with frequent departures throughout the day. To buy a ticket, simply tap your contactless card at the barriers at the station, and you’re good to go.

Once you arrive, it’s about a 15-minute walk from the station to the historic centre. Turn left as you leave the station and follow these signs on the pavement to the old town.

Things to Do in Amersfoort

Morning: Explore the Historic Centre

Admire the Koppelpoort

Start your visit at Koppelpoort, Amersfoort’s fancy medieval gate that once protected the city. It’s a combination land and water gate and is one of the best-preserved gates in the Netherlands. You might even see it open for passing boats.

Wander the Quaint Streets

The best way to enjoy Amersfoort is simply to wander. The old town has narrow, cobbled streets, historic gabled houses, markets and picturesque canals.

Some of the prettiest streets include Muurhuizen, a circular street built along the original medieval city walls, and Langestraat, the main shopping street.

Visit Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren (The Tower of Our Lady)

This impressive 15th-century church tower is one of the tallest in the Netherlands. Climbing to the top apparently offers stunning views of Amersfoort and the surrounding countryside. If you’re feeling brave (and your legs are up for it), it’s well worth the effort.

Or simply do as I did, admire the tower, and enjoy a stroopwafel instead.

Afternoon: Culture & Canal Views

Lunch at a Canal-Side Café

Amersfoort has many great cafés and restaurants, many with lovely canal-side terraces. Whether you fancy traditional Dutch fare or something international, it’s a great place to take a break and soak in the atmosphere.

I had a lovely light lunch at Amersfoorts DIEP on Nieuweweg 5 in the old town.

Take a Canal Walk or Boat Tour

Like Utrecht and many towns in the Netherlands, Amersfoort has a beautiful canal system. You can either stroll along the water or take a boat tour, which offers a relaxing way to see the city from a different perspective. However, I visited in March, and it was far too chilly for such an activity.

Visit the Mondriaanhuis

Amersfoort is the birthplace of Piet Mondrian, the famous abstract artist known for his bold geometric designs. His childhood home is now a museum dedicated to his work, and even if you’re not an art enthusiast, it’s still a fascinating insight into his life and creative process.

Evening: A Relaxed Stroll Before Heading Back To Utrecht

Before taking the train back to Utrecht, have one last stroll around the city. In the evening, Amersfoort’s historic buildings are beautifully illuminated.
