Buddha at Wat Mahathat
Wat Mahathat, also known as “The Monastery of the Great Relic” was once the main temple in what was the capitol of Siam, Ayutthaya. The temple once served as the religious center of the kingdom but fell into disrepair in the 17th century and was eventually razed by the Burmese in 1767. The temple is perhaps best known as the place where the Buddha’s head is wrapped in a tree but there is so much more to see. It is a Khmer style temple, unusual for Thailand, and covers over 715-acres. The temple has been listed the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
