Coming to Malta and wondering what’s the best way to get from Malta Airport to your accommodation?

Whether you’re landing in Malta for a holiday or a business trip, knowing the best way to get from Malta Airport to your destination on the islands is vital to starting your trip on the right foot.

In this post, we’ll explore the various transport options available to help you choose the best mode of travel for your needs.

By Bolt, Uber or ECabs

The easiest and most convenient way to get from Malta Airport to anywhere on the island is to use Bolt, Uber, or ECabs, which are ride-hailing services that operate in Malta.

Simply download the app to your phone, sign up, and book your taxi on arrival. These services offer a range of vehicle types, from standard cars to larger vehicles for groups or families, and you can see the estimated fare before you book.

Don’t worry; free Wi-Fi is available at the airport, or if needed, you can buy a SIM card at the Epic store, which is open in the Arrivals Hall from 09:00 to 21:00 every day.

Plenty of taxis are always waiting outside, so booking one in advance is unnecessary. I’ve rarely waited more than a few minutes before my taxi arrives.

Admittedly, at first glance, finding your taxi outside might appear slightly chaotic, but somehow, the system works.

I personally don’t recommend using the Airport Taxis. So as you leave the airport, just pass by their office and walk outside towards Coach Park.

Why Don’t I Recommend The Airport Taxis?

While the Airport Taxis may seem like a convenient option, they usually come with a hefty price tag.

In contrast, Bolt, Uber, or ECabs offer a more cost-effective solution, allowing you to save your hard-earned money for the more enjoyable aspects of your trip.

Let me give you some examples:

Airport Taxi to Sliema €20 With Bolt €12

Airport to Mellieha. €33. With Bolt €22

Airport to Three Cities €20 With Bolt. €8

What Happens If I Need Data And I’m Arriving After 9 p.m.?

If your flight arrives after 9 p.m., consider buying a Maltese e-SIM data plan in advance. Then, you won’t need to worry about not having data when you arrive in Malta.

Now, I have never used this company because I live in Malta and get phone data through my home internet package, but I have heard several good reviews. I will give them a go on my next non-European adventure and see how we get on.

If you’re new to using an e-SIM, apparently, the process is very straightforward. Select the plan duration that fits your needs, then scan the generated QR code to load the e-SIM onto your phone automatically.

By Bus

The bus is the cheapest way to your destination. Four express airport buses depart from Malta Airport. The bus stops are located just outside the Malta International Airport terminal, across the road from the Departures Hall.

X1 – St Paul’s Bay, Mellieha, and Cirkewwa (Ferry Port for Gozo)

X2 – Sliema and St Julian’s

X3 – Buggiba

X4 – Valletta

The timetables of these four routes are available here. Hal-Luqa is the name of the Malta Airport Bus Stop.

For real-time updates (it doesn’t always work, though), you can also download the official Tallinja app, which is free on your mobile app store.

Visit the public transport website for detailed information about these services and other bus routes to and from the rest of Malta.

You can buy your bus tickets and Talinja cards at the airport at the following places:

Malta Public Transport Information and Sales Office in Arrivals (Open every day between 08:00 and 19:30)

24/7 Dispensing Machine outside the Sales Office

24/7 Dispensing Machine by the bus stop, located just outside the terminal entrance

At the WHSmith shop in Arrivals (Open every day between 10:00 and 19:00)

You can also buy tickets on all Malta Public Transport buses, but they sometimes refuse to let you on if you don’t have the right money or small notes. Tickets currently cost €2,50 per person.

However, buses can be crowded, especially during peak hours, and may not always be the most comfortable option, particularly if you have lots of luggage.

Hotel Shuttle Service

The Malta Transfer service offers shuttle transportation between Malta’s airport and popular holiday destinations, such as Valletta, Sliema, St. Julian’s, Gzira, Qawra, Bugibba, St. Paul’s Bay, and Xemxija.

This service offers a convenient option that can be easily booked at the Malta Transfer desk in the airport’s baggage reclaim area, on their website or through their smartphone app, available on both the Google Play Store and Apple’s iOS App Store. Please note that the shared shuttle option is not available at this time.

The Malta Transfer pick-up location is in the coach parking area. Follow the signs for “Hotel Airport Shuttle.”

Welcome PickUps

If you prefer knowing someone is waiting for you at the airport, try Welcome PickUps. Yes, it’s the most expensive option, but the service is good and reliable, and they have a great reputation.

Rental Car

Pros: Renting a car allows you to explore Malta at your own pace and access remote areas that are inaccessible by public transport. Several car rental companies operate from the airport.

Cons: How should I say this? They drive like idiots in Malta. Having a car is quite handy if you’re staying in Gozo, but if you’re staying in Sliema or Valletta, you don’t need one. The streets are narrow, traffic can be horrendous and finding somewhere to park can be a complete nightmare.

Anyway before deciding on the best way for you to get from Malta Airport to your accommodation, do consider factors such as your budget, travel preferences, and the convenience of your chosen mode of transport. For me, I will always choose Bolt or Ecabs.

Safe Travels, and Welcome to Malta!
